Our view on more sustainable animal agriculture and better animal welfare
Our commitment to more sustainable agriculture and better animal welfare is strongly connected to the IKEA sustainability strategy. Raw materials from agriculture are widely used in IKEA to produce home furnishings and food.
We believe that good food starts with high-quality ingredients, including those from animals that have experienced a decent life. For IKEA, good animal welfare is a central component of our vision for more sustainable animal agriculture. This includes regenerating resources, protecting ecosystems and improving biodiversity by continuing to secure and develop responsible sourcing standards that include environmental, social and animal welfare criteria.
To ensure these commitments are met across our value chain, we work with IWAY – the IKEA way of responsibly procuring products, services, materials and components. It is the IKEA supplier code of conduct that sets clear expectations for environmental, social and working conditions, as well as animal welfare. It is mandatory for all suppliers and service providers that work with IKEA.
Requirements for our suppliers include animal welfare, as well as working, social, and environmental conditions. We verify compliance with our requirements through audits, as well as by using credible third party certification bodies.
While our suppliers take ownership for the implementation of IWAY, based on their individual business setup, IKEA teams support by providing training, facilitate peer learning and enable suppliers to reach our common sustainability ambitions.
We are taking steps together with IKEA suppliers globally to secure compliance with our requirements across the total value chain and reach our overall ambitions. As we move forward, we will publish updates on our work.
