Our view on air

IKEA wants to have a positive impact on people, society and the planet. We work in a number of ways to inspire and enable people to healthier, more sustainable lives. A priority is to contribute to a world of clean air, where we are committed to actively reducing air pollutants in our value chain and enabling people to purify the air in their homes.

“Increasing levels of air pollution affects the lives and livelihoods of millions of people around the world. We know that there is no single solution to solve air pollution, and we work long term for positive change, focusing on the root cause and not only treating the symptoms. The journey is on-going, but we have already taken important steps, such as enabling our suppliers to transition to cleaner sources of energy and introducing new solutions to purify air at home,” says Alexandra Audrey Galef, development leader within sustainability at IKEA Range & Supply.

Examples of actions taken by IKEA to reduce air pollutants in its value chain and enabling people to purify the air in their homes are:

  • Developing affordable and efficient solutions, such as the FÖRNUFTIG air purifier, enable people to improve their indoor air.
  • Going all-in for induction hobs, which compared to gas stoves, will limit indoor air pollution from cooking, such as MATMÄSSIG hob which has been reduced in size overall while maintaining the same cooking-zone size, bringing efficient induction technology into homes.
  • Launching the Better Air Now initiative, aimed at turning rice straw – a rice harvesting residue traditionally burned and which contributes heavily to air pollution – into new renewable material for IKEA. The first result from the initiative is the FÖRÄNDRING collection of baskets, rugs and bowls, sold in selected markets.
  • Releasing the “Clean Air at Home” guide, highlighting simple changes to get cleaner air at home.
  • Tackling air pollution from home delivery by aiming to achieve zero emissions from home deliveries by 2025.*
  • Offering charging stations at IKEA stores so customers can use electric cars and encourage the electrification of transport.*
  • All our product specifications include strict limits on emissions of chemicals and volatile organic compounds that cause indoor air pollution.
  • Reducing air pollutants from the transport of IKEA products.
  • IKEA supports the Arctic Commitment, meaning that we do not allow IKEA containers to be shipped via arctic routes.

IKEA is committed to becoming climate positive by 2030 while growing the IKEA business. Phasing out oil and coal in production is an important step to realise the climate positive commitments which will also improve air quality and health. IKEA has announced a goal to phase out all coal and oil used on-site in production where feasible by 2025.
