This is Sonos
The Sonos vision is a straight forward one – fill every home with music and make listening out loud a valued, and shared, experience again. Since its start in 2002 the audio company has worked relentlessly to achieve just that, bringing the rest of us a great-sounding, easy-to-use wireless home sound system that makes our everyday lives a bit better.
As simple as it may sound to bring great audio to the people, it’s no small venture. Today Sonos spreads its Hi-Fi love to more than 60 countries and is always on the lookout for ways to make the experience even better.
“Music means a lot to us, it’s a deeply emotional part of our lives. The same is true for sound in a broader sense, whether it’s hearing your baby’s laughter or listening to a podcast. We want to make it easier for everyone to tune in to all that”, says Tad Toulis, VP of Design.
“We’ve found a way to bring great audio quality into your life at home – one which you don’t have to be a signed-up audiophile or an IT-expert to enjoy.”
In your view, how aware are people in general of the impact of sound around the house?
“The importance of great sound is becoming more and more obvious. For a long time, people put up with good enough, seeing sound systems as too complicated. Today we’re surrounded by streamed content, not limited to music, where sound is a vital part of the experience – we call it the sonic internet. As our digital world moves increasingly from one where we swipe and read to one where we speak and listen, it really underlines the importance of sound quality. Also, hearing things played out loud makes people feel less alienated, I think”, Tad says.
An essential part of the Sonos idea is that it should be easy to build exactly the sound system you want and need whether it takes one, two, or more speakers. Being smart, they connect over your home WiFi and are controlled via an app or with your voice, thanks to partnering with virtual assistant Amazon Alexa (which will soon be followed by Google Assistant – the development work never stops).
“Whatever sound content you want and wherever you want it, we should be able to deliver. The ability to customize the experience is crucial”, says Patrick Murray, Senior Director Global Business Development.
Although you can stream different music, or whatever you fancy listening to, to different rooms just as easily as you stream the same all over the home, Patrick stresses the importance of making way for a shared experience:
“Before people started consuming sound through earbuds music was all about sharing and getting together. We fundamentally believe in the positive impact of this shared listening – on our lives and on our relationships. We’re bringing back listening out loud.”
